Redefining America's Hunger Narrative
Context
The movement to end America’s hunger problem needed a narrative shift to help destigmatize hunger and make space for human dignity, moving away from a ‘bootstraps’ mentality, and assigning blame to systems rather than to people already suffering.
Our Work
We wrote and designed an inclusive and insights-centered messaging playbook.
We wrote a movement-building playbook to equip anti-hunger organizations to communicate how historical and system racism impacts poverty by confronting existing harmful narratives. We utilized research-vetted frames and language to increase public support around hunger; identified ways to shift current messaging and language that may perpetuate dehumanizing frames; and socialized the playbook with a national coalition of anti-hunger organizations for widespread use.
The Impact
Transformed research and insights on hunger in America into an accessible, digestible, and usable playbook
Worked with a national coalition of anti-hunger organizations to equip them with inclusive, intentional narratives about how anti-Black racism has shaped the way that hunger manifests in the United States
Identified clear and impactful ways for organizations to shift current messaging and language that may perpetuate harmful frames
